Pedestrian accident leads to multi-car wreck, interstate 20 near Lowery Boulevard was shut down in both directions Wednesday morning after a pedestrian was struck and killed. 37-year old Dehaven Holmes, of Decatur, was walking along the highway when he was struck and killed by a passing vehicle.
The name and information on the car were not released. Immediately following the pedestrian being struck, the interstate turned into a virtual parking lot. At least 6 cars crashed into each other while trying to avoid the accident scene. Unfortunately, this caused a multi-vehicle crash that took more than 2 hours to clean up.
The accident happened at about 6:20 a.m. on Wednesday morning. The fact that the accident happened during the middle of morning rush-hour traffic didn’t help matters. The police didn’t know where to start when it came to untangling the cars.
Surprisingly, only one other driver was injured in the crash. One man was taken to Grady Memorial Hospital with minor injuries and was released later that same day. No other injuries have been reported. The name of this second victim has also not been released.
There is nothing announced as to the cause of the pedestrian accident. It doesn’t appear that any charges have been filed. The authorities haven’t mentioned the make and model of the car that struck Holmes.
Holmes was pronounced dead at the scene. It’s unclear whether the Decatur man was attempting to cross the Interstate at the time of the accident or not.
